The day before sunrise

Very Entertaining StoryThis book turned out much better then I thought it would. I have read a number of books about the last days of World War Two in Berlin and this book captures that same feel. I thought the author does a good job in describing the atmosphere to the point that I could feel the tension and depression. The story is a good one with a solid plot. This book reads well with economic time successfully spent on character development. If you are interested in this period of time this is a very good fiction book that covers it.
The best world war II thriller yet!As a self appointed WWII buff and historian i find Thomas Wisemans Novel/HistoryThe Day before Sunrise probably the best combination of history andNovel type thrills I have ever read. Mr Wiseman conveys such realism in his style that at times I actually could smell and feel the bombed out and hased feel of Berlin in it's death throws. The writing style and character development would make Michner jealous. If you would really like to be truly transported to Berlin in early 1945 than this is th ticket. I can say no more other than it's time to take a ride. Peter Guzzo pguzzo@xtalwind.net

The Day Boy and the Night Girl

Engaging and movingMacDonald's skill in imagery and storytelling are exemplified by this memorable fairy tale. One of those wonderful rare books that's extremely accessible and "light", but also is deeply stirring and has lasting weight. I'm sure it's one I'll enjoy reading to my kids.
This is a lovely children's storyI absolutely love this story! George MacDonald has a lovely sort of grandfatherly style, and this is perfect to be divided up as a series of bedtime stories. A boy who has never seen night and a girl who has never seen day help each other cope with their fears. It is available online if you don't mind digging a little. Otherwise, you'll have to wait for them to find it for you. E-mail me if you want the address for the online e-text version. It doesn't quite have the charm of an actual book, but if it's all you've got, it's better than nothing.

Wonderful way to draw your child closer to God!My 4 year old daughter and I finished this book and she was not only excited about finishing her first "big" book, but she told me how much she enjoyed reading it every night before bedtime. She faithfully reminded me (even when I thought I was too tired to read it to her) that it was time for devotions. It also allowed her and I quality time together and for her to ask questions about God's Word. Recommend highly.
Great positive and supportive daily devotions for children. This book with positive children's devotions will be appreciated by both children and adults. The attractive artwork with multi-cultural drawings embellishes the devotions for our current society.

Day by Day Baby Care

Best How-To Book Ever!My pediatrican recommended this book when my now 13-year-old was born, and it's only slight hyperbole to say that my children are alive and well because Miriam Stoppard! The book gives very practical advice on how to wrap a baby, tips to dress a baby, how to bathe a baby, how to take a temperature, etc. My mother-in-law was in awe of my skills and never guessed that I was so proficient because I'd been reading the book before she came over! The book also has growth charts in the back where you can record your children's height and weight progress and compare it against several norms. I'm reviewing this book now because I'm on-line to order the upteenth copy for another friend who is expecting.
Wonderful reference for preparing for your first babyI love this author. She is very down-to-earth. I buy this book and her Pregnancy & Birth book for everyone in my family who gets pregnant.
For first time moms it really lays out everything you will need to be completely ready once the baby arrives.
It breaks everything down so you are prepared and keeps you informed of things you will need well into the first year.
I recommend this book.

Day Daddy Stayed Home
Published in Library Binding by Doubleday (January, 1900)

Just an Awesome Book!!I wanted to share that this is a book my 5 yo dd brought home from her school's library and tonight she read it to me!! She has been wanting to read and all of a sudden we both realized she had read sentence upon sentence!! It really is a cute book and one I hope will be around for a long time! I love the excitement in the child's "voice" when he realizes it has snowed and that Daddy is home... Way too precious!!
The Day Daddy Stayed HomeI don't know what it is about this book, but my one year old loves it! I read it at least three times a day to her. The book has great illustrations, and it's refreshing to have a story in which the father interacts with his child in such a fun and playful way. The story is told from the child's point of view and recounts a snowy day in which the father is snowed in and can't go to work. The father and child spend the day together outside playing in the snow. Wonderful book that sparks the imagination (especially since we don't see much snow here in Louisiana).

A Day for Dying

softened with compassionDorothy Simpson writes excellent books in the British cozy-mystery genre, and, in a gentle style of her own, she introduces us to villains who are not so much evil as just prone to making mistakes. I've read all of her works, and I eagerly look forward to more.
She treats all of her characters, police detectice Thanet and those he must investigate, with a careful compassion and a gentle probing into motives and actions. Her novels are not psychological studies; instead they are journeys into wisdom as we learn to understand the hearts of all the characters, Thanet and his family included. I feel that her approach can be labeled "unique" in a genre which is usually so cookie-cutter repetitive. Treat yourself to reading this book, or any of her works!

An excellent whodunit! This is the first mystery by Dorothy Simpson where I actually figured out the culprit before Inspector Thanet. What I love about D. Simpson's books are the detail. Her characters are fully realized, you see them with all their faults and foibles. And this book is very timely, but I can't say more than that, because I'd spoil some of the mystery. Another thing I enjoy about D. Simpson's series, is that you really believe there is an Inspector Thanet. We're taken along with him when he goes home (I suggest you find the very first book and read all of them in sequence - because you find out about his wife and two children - their struggles in childrearing AND Thanet's problems in dealing with a wife who wants to work outside the home)as well as out and about interviewing suspects. D. Simpson's books are always very rich - with characters, motives, settings. I've never been to England, but with D. Simpson's talents for description, I'm there in Kent with Thanet. I can't wait to read her latest, which is coming out in February.

Day Hike! North Cascades (Day Hike)
Published in Paperback by Sasquatch Books (June, 2002)
Average review score:

Really Good Guide!I own the authors trail running book and liked it so I bought his new book as soon as it came out. It really fills the void in North Cascade guide books-it covers the Mt. Baker side very nicely, where other books ignore it. A definte must if you hike up here! I've carried it in my pack since I bought it. I like the rating system, the kid guide, the directions, and the topos - I also like that it isn't bulky or heavy. I met Mike Mcquaide at a book signing recentley - he really loves the trail!
Awesome jobI got this book because I read Mike McQuaide's "Trail Running Guide to Western Washington" and thought that anyone who could run more than 50 trails around here had to slow down eventually to write a hiking book.
This one is a really good hiking book, too, with quick reference information on each trail at the top of the page. You can get everything you need to know about the hike without reading the whole description. Of course, if you do that, you'll miss some fine writing.
This is another one of those new trail guides that provides the kind of information your feet will appreciate most, and there's none of the preaching and reminiscing you find in a lot of those older guides.
If you're looking for the best guidebook to the trails of the North Cascades, you don't need to look any more.

Day Hikes from the River: A Guide to 100 Hikes from Camps on the Colorado River in Grand Canyon National Park (2nd Edition)
Published in Paperback by Vishnu Temple Press (July, 2002)
Average review score:

2nd better than 1stThe second edition of Day Hikes From The River is great! The maps are the biggest change. Though still packed with the same info (and more), the clarity really helps. Thanks Tom for doing this. We used Day Hikes to hike up Vishnu Creek and Kanab Creek to Whispering Falls. Worked great! The resource tips were helpful and not too overbearing. This book is getting real close to a real river guide. The other "guides" give river miles and that's about it. This book ties it all together. I'd sure recommend it for anyone headed down Big Red. The only drawback is that this book is NOT waterproof! I learned the hard way....
Day Hikes is the best!We just finished the river trip of our dreams. 18 days to Diamond Creek, my buddy Jim waited 12 years to get his permit. Day Hikes from the River was a must book to have on our trip! We stopped at "Shiver Grotto", Nautiloid Canyon, Nankoweep, Clear Creek, got water at Phantom (easy to find), Shinumo, Elves Chasm, Stone Creek, managed the Thunder River-Deer Creek loop, got aced out at Havasu and thanks to Day Hikes, and had a great time at Tuckup. What a resource. The maps are really clear, and the easy to follow directions made it all work out. Thanks for the great guide!

Day Hikes in Ventura County, California : 43 of the Best
Published in Paperback by Day Hike Books (January, 1999)
Average review score:

Great Stimulus for AdventureThis book has sparked some incredible hiking for the dog and I. The descriptions of each hike are excellent. One awseome spot the book guided me to was Santa Paula Creek Canyon which has a beautiful stream and deep pools for swimming. Pointers are provided for finding trail heads. If you are going to venture out into the Sespe/Los Padres Wilderness, however, I reccomend buying a good topographic trail map. This is primarily an "idea" book.
Day Hikes in Ventura CountyAn easy to use hiking book, small enough to fit into one's daypack. Coverage of the county is excellent, directions to trailheads are clear. It's the only book available that covers most of Ventura County.

Day Hiking Grand Teton National Park
Published in Paperback by Dayhiking Press (June, 1993)

Great BookVery useful simple guide. I use this along with Best Easy Day Hikes to plan my hikes Oct 2002 - see curiouscat.com/travels for photos from the hikes shown in the book.
A must-have guide for hiking trips in the Grand TetonsSmall and light (great for backpackers) cheap (great for everyone) and best of all, it gives what the title says. A great day-hiking guide for the park, offering some of the lore and background history of the Tetons, information concerning the park's geology, biotic communities, native wildlife and weather conditions. You'll never find a book on the subject that gives you more (or even close to as much) for such a low price. Can't be beat--a must for anyone planning a trip to the Grand Tetons.
